Group orders just got an update because more people are eating together | Inside Grab

At a glance: GrabFood Group Order is a feature that lets multiple people choose a restaurant together and add items into a shared digital cart from their individual Grab accounts. It includes automated bill splitting, where food costs, delivery fees, and tips are charged directly to each participant’s preferred payment method. Ordering food together just got a lot easier.

Why we updated GrabFood Group Order for diners across Southeast Asia

Whether it’s grabbing lunch with colleagues at the office or gathering with family at home, sharing meals is a core part of everyday culture in  Southeast Asia. Across GrabFood markets, group orders spike significantly during weekday lunch hours and weekend dinner times as people gather to eat together.

However, organising group food deliveries traditionally came with major friction points. Someone has to pass their phone around the room for others to add their orders. Individual bill shares have to be calculated, and often, long after the meal is over, friends need to be chased to transfer their part.

To eliminate these hassles, we launched major updates to the GrabFood Group Order feature, transforming it into a fully seamless, automated group dining experience.

Key features: What’s new in GrabFood Group Order?
GrabFood Group Order gives office teams, families, and friends complete transparency and convenience when ordering together. If the group participants already know where they want to order from, the host can start the group order directly from the merchant’s GrabFood page.
Users no longer have to deal with the hassle of transferring payments to one another.
1. Suggest restaurants, then vote as a group

If the group still needs to make up its mind, the host can share a number of options and invite the group to vote.

Group members can vote which restaurant to order from.
2. Instant QR code & link sharing

Starting a group order takes seconds. The host shares a link to group order participants via messaging app, or they can generate a QR code that nearby friends can scan directly with their phones to jump straight into the shared cart.

3. Automated bill splitting (no more manual payment reminders)

The biggest pain point in group dining is calculating who owes what. GrabFood Group Order solves this by offering automated bill splitting:

  • Itemised payment: Each participant is charged automatically for the specific food items they added to the cart.
  • Proportional delivery & tax split: Delivery fees, platform fees, and local taxes are divided proportionally or equally across participants.
  • Direct payment deduction: Charges are auto-deducted from each member’s individual default payment method (GrabPay Wallet, linked credit/debit card, or regional digital payment options) at checkout.
4. Order deadline

To prevent meal orders from getting delayed by late additions, the host can set an Order Deadline. Once the timer expires, the cart locks automatically, allowing the host to review and submit the order on time.

Hosts can set a deadline on group orders.
5. Real-time order tracking

Every group order participant can track the delivery partner’s progress in real-time from their own Grab app, ensuring everyone knows exactly when their food will arrive.

Everyone can keep track of where the order is at.

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.

As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.

Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
