Features like cash payments and custom-built maps for motorcycles reflect Grab’s deep focus on local consumer behaviors.

“We obsess about each market’s needs,” says Kandal. This hyperlocal approach sets Grab apart, enabling operations across eight countries with [now over 44 million monthly users*]. Grab’s product teams are structured into “tech families” to balance regional strategy with market-specific customization.

Immersive product development

Kandal’s team regularly immerses themselves in the daily work of drivers and merchants, gaining firsthand insights to improve products. Experiences like delivering food in heavy rain inform solutions that enhance efficiency and user satisfaction. Grab also learns from global leaders like DoorDash and Uber to complement its hyperlocal strategy.

Driving impact with tech

Grab uses cutting-edge technology like proprietary maps, AI-powered computer vision, and multilingual generative AI to solve real-world problems. These innovations make services accessible to Southeast Asia’s diverse population, where smartphone adoption is high.

As a public company valued [over US$20 billion as of May 2025*], Grab has achieved profitability while looking ahead to emerging technologies like self-driving cars and advanced AI.

Kandal views these advancements as opportunities to tackle previously unsolvable challenges. “The last few years in tech have been the most fun for me,” he shares.

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.

As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.

Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
