This isn’t your typical ride.

It’s the GrabCyclo, the latest ride on the Grab app. It’s currently available in Hue City, Vietnam.

The cyclo, a traditional tricycle taxi, is a common mode of transport in Hue City and a popular choice for visitors eager to explore the city’s scenic streets. With GrabCyclo, we’re making it more convenient for passengers and cyclo drivers to connect seamlessly through the Grab app.

Beyond being an additional mode of transport on the app, it is also a step forward in equipping local cyclo drivers with digital literacy skills and helping them adapt to modern technology. Through this initiative, drivers gain access to new income opportunities and exposure to the benefits of digital transformation, all while maintaining the traditional cyclo experience.

How it works

During the pilot phase, passengers can book GrabCyclo through the Grab app, for pick-up or drop-off at five key locations:

📍 Four locations in the Imperial City area:

👉 Opposite Hien Nhon Gate

👉Near Doan Thi Diem Parking Lot

👉Nam Xuong Eobau Parking Lot

👉Nam Thang Eobau Parking Lot

📍 Toa Kham Boat Station area

These locations have been carefully selected to provide convenient access to Hue’s iconic landmarks and attractions such as the Imperial City.

Why Hue City?

As Vietnam’s capital during the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945), Hue is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the iconic Imperial City. Known for its rich legacy, Hue draws travellers from around the globe, making it the ideal destination to pilot GrabCyclo.

With GrabCyclo, visitors can immerse themselves in an authentic local experience while actively supporting and empowering the local community.

Elsewhere, we’ve also integrated traditional transportation options into our platform, helping drivers to stay relevant as the habits of locals and tourists evolve thanks to digital transformation In Thailand, for instance, users can easily book a Rod-Daeng or a Tuk-Tuk through Grab, just as they would a regular GrabCar.

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.

As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.

Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
