Grab levies a fee on each ride that goes back into improving the Grab product for all users—end-users, driver-partners and merchants alike.

This platform fee, sometimes known as a service fee, is a charge that many online services platforms charge for using their platform.

These fees are reinvested into maintaining, developing and enhancing product features to boost the Grab services. These fees also help to cover operational costs of rolling out product and service improvements that will benefit our users.

We commit a significant portion of the platform fee to developing and maintaining product features focused on safety, security, and quality and productivity for our passengers.

Such product development efforts include:

  • Facial recognition system used to verify the identity of passengers and driver-partners for the safety of everyone
  • Rides equipped with a safety centre button for passengers to ride with a peace of mind
  • Overall maintenance of all new product features on the app

A portion of the platform fee also goes into driver-partner support, including benefits and training allowances, to name a few examples.

The fee is part of Grab’s longstanding commitment to reinvesting in tech and safety, and allows us to continue to do so sustainably.

The platform fee is separate from driver-partner commissions, which is the fee paid to Grab for the ride-matching service we provide. Commissions are collected as a percentage of the trip fare.

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.

As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.

Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
