At Grab, data drives every decision we make. It guides us in creating new features and finding smarter delivery routes, so our delivery-partners can work more efficiently. With the right data, we also help our merchant-partners grow and thrive.
Providing data access to everyone at Grab is the challenge. In the past, Grabbers had to ask internal analysts for help, or learn how to navigate complex data dashboards, or write SQL queries. SQL is a programming language used to retrieve data from large datasets.
We wanted to make it easier for everyone at Grab to get access to data that falls within their domain, without specific technical skills. We saw an opportunity with the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) that can translate text to SQL.
The outcome is Jarvis, an AI-powered data assistant designed to make accessing insights as easy as asking a question!
Jarvis transformed how Grab operates, and it’s a showcase for how AI can unlock the full potential of data for businesses everywhere.
Jarvis is powered by AI, combining natural language processing with advanced data analytics. It’s built on two key components:
When a Grabber asks a question, Jarvis translates it into a SQL query to fetch the relevant data.
Here’s what goes on under the hood:
The result? Grabbers get the exact information they need—without writing a single line of code.
Of course, Grabbers can retrieve only the type of data their role gives them access to. Jarvis understands the user’s data access privileges and denies queries that are out of scope.
Jarvis doesn’t stop at delivering data. It helps teams interpret the numbers and uncover the “why” behind trends.
Whether it’s diagnosing a revenue drop or identifying growth opportunities. Jarvis reveals what drives trends, anomalies, and gives explanations, turning numbers into narratives that teams can act on.
Today, Jarvis has already transformed how teams work with data.
Our Merchant AI Assistant is powered by Jarvis and allows merchant-partners to check their sales performance and get tailored recommendations. Questions like “How can I increase my sales next week?” are answered in seconds, helping merchants optimise their strategies.
Account managers at Gran use Jarvis to get instant updates on key accounts. They receive a weekly summary of their accounts along with recommendations for what to do next. Using Jarvis Report Builder, they can generate detailed merchant reports on demand.
Anyone at Grab, whether they work in operations or other divisions, can use Jarvis to independently explore data, provided that it falls within their scope of access. They can interact with Jarvis through its integration in Slack, our workplace collaboration environment.
Jarvis is just getting started. Soon, Grabbers will be able to engage Jarvis in multi-turn conversations—asking follow-up questions and diving deeper into insights, just like they would with a human analyst.
Jarvis will deliver tailored insights based on each user’s role, team, and preferences, making data even more relevant and actionable, and will even offer proactive recommendations.
We also plan to bring Jarvis beyond Slack, integrating it into other internal tools and portals to ensure data is always within reach to drive smarter decisions.

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.
As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.
Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
