Grab Malaysia collaborates with local conservation efforts as part of Green Programme
- New contributions support efforts at Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project and WWF-Malaysia’s Belawai Mangrove Project.
PETALING JAYA, 22 January 2026 – Grab Malaysia has expanded its Grab Green Programme, through new partnerships with two leading local conservation initiatives – the Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project in Sabah and WWF-Malaysia’s Mangrove and Marine Mammal Conservation in Sarawak, reaffirming its commitment to environmental protection and community empowerment.
The Grab Green Programme enables consumers to take voluntary, simple, collective action to mitigate climate change. By opting in through the Grab app, they can contribute up to RM0.20 for each ride, or GrabFood and GrabMart order. These small contributions are then pooled and channelled through the purchase of certified carbon credits or donations funding impactful environmental projects in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia. These conservation efforts include forest and mangrove restoration and the protection of endangered species.
“At Grab, we believe that sustainability starts with collective effort. The Grab Green Programme makes it easy for everyone, from everyday users to driver- and merchant-partners, to play a role in protecting our natural heritage – in Malaysia and across the region. Our partnerships with local conservation organisations reflect our continued commitment to create real, measurable impact within the communities and environments where we operate,” said Adelene Foo, Managing Director of Grab Malaysia.
Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project
The Kuamut Rainforest Conservation Project protects 83,381 hectares of rainforest in Sabah. It is Malaysia’s first certified nature-based carbon project and is amongst the highest rated projects of its kind globally. Through the protection and regeneration of the forest, which is certified through the Verra Verified Carbon Standard, the project avoids and removes an average of 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) annually. Beyond carbon, the project protects at least 30 threatened species, whilst working to support wellbeing and improve opportunities for the local people living near the project site.
Rajang-Belawai-Paloh Mangrove and Marine Mammal Conservation Project
The Mangrove and Marine Mammal Conservation Project in Sarawak focuses on conserving vital mangrove ecosystems as well as the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) within the Rajang-Belawai-Paloh Delta. The initiative aims to prevent mangrove loss, rehabilitate degraded areas, and strengthen empowerment of coastal communities for conservation, ensuring the long-term health of Malaysia’s coastal and marine ecosystems.
Additionally, the Grab Green Programme also supports highly accredited forest carbon projects in the region with collective contributions from users. For example, it partners with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) to help safeguard the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary in Cambodia, a 290,000 hectare conservation landscape anchored by a 167,000 hectare REDD+ project delivering verified benefits under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) standards. The sanctuary also protects over 80 threatened species and combats deforestation while supporting local Indigenous communities.
Grab’s comprehensive sustainability initiatives also leverage the scale of its digital platform across Southeast Asia to build awareness around responsible consumption and make it easy for everyone to go green. In Malaysia, consumers can opt out of single-use cutlery with their food deliveries to reduce unnecessary waste, while the KLEAN partnership allows users to recycle plastic containers, bottles, and aluminium cans at reverse vending machines (RVMs) in exchange for Grab vouchers, supporting the country’s zero packaging waste goal by 2040.
Grab Malaysia has also launched its first electric vehicle (EV) fleet dedicated to airport rides at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), using BYD M6 seven-seater electric MPVs and a dedicated EV lounge for passengers. This initiative, aligned with the National Transport Policy 2019–2030, allows passengers to choose low-emission rides while complementing Grab’s regional collaboration with BYD, Yinson GreenTech, and Power-Up Tech to scale EV adoption, accelerating the shift to low-carbon transportation.
Through these partnerships, Grab Malaysia continues to build on its sustainability vision by supporting trusted, high-impact projects that deliver both environmental and social benefits. Beyond contributing to environmental projects, these initiatives help preserve biodiversity, strengthen local livelihoods, and foster collaboration between the public, private, and non-profit sectors. By empowering consumers and partners to take meaningful action, whether through recycling with KLEAN, choosing low-emission EV airport rides, or contributing to the Grab Green Programme, Grab is demonstrating how collective effort can create real, measurable impact.
