KUALA LUMPUR, 30 September 2015– GrabCar, the app-based car with driver service powered by the MyTeksi mobile app, today launched #GrabitBeatit, a regional campaign to promote breast health awareness and educate women on the importance of self-examination and early detection to beat breast cancer, one of the most common cancers in women. This campaign is part of GrabCar’s continued focus on enabling women’s health and safety.

In support of Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA), a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) championing breast cancer awareness, GrabCar is selling limited edition t-shirts designed by homegrown fashion brand Pestle and Mortar this month to raise funds to support BCWA’s activities to reach out to women in Malaysia and provide free breast examinations.

Personalities who are supporting this campaign include Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, BFM’s Freda Liu, Kyoto Protocol’s Fuad, Capital FM’s Isabel Taye, Melinda Looi, Chef Nik Michael Imran, Jinny Boy, Grim Film’s Jared Lee, Patricia K, Lexie Rodriguez, Daphne Iking, Hitz.fm’s Arnold Loh, Christy Ng, WomenGirl’s Abby Latif and breast cancer survivor Sham Van Boonstra.

“We want to encourage women to prioritise their health and safety, particularly when there are options for preventive measures to be taken. For example, we have become a fundamental part of many women’s lives, allowing them to book transport from the comforts of their home or office and commute safely everyday,” said a GrabCar spokesperson. “With #GrabitBeatit, we hope women will consciously think about early detection of breast cancer – so that they can continue to lead active and fulfilling lives.”

Breast cancer has high cure rates when detected early. To encourage early screening, GrabCar is providing discounted rides to 15 breast cancer screening clinics from 12 to 31 October. Women in Malaysia can use the promo code ‘GRABITBEATIT’ when booking a GrabCar with the MyTeksi app.

According to the World Health Organization , breast cancer kills more than 500,000 women around the world every year. In resource-poor settings, usually the developing countries, a majority of women with breast cancer are diagnosed at an advanced stage of disease, resulting in low 10 to 40 per cent five-year survival rates. In comparison, the five-year survival rate for early localized breast cancer in settings where early detection and basic treatment are available and accessible exceeds 80 per cent.

BCWA president Prof Dr Zaharah Aiyub said, “It can’t be stressed enough that early detection saves lives. If a woman detects breast cancer at an early stage, it is easier to treat and less costly. We need to engage more people in a dialogue about breast cancer by sharing messages of hope and inspiration.”

    Love boobs? So does cancer

The #GrabitBeatit t-shirts come with the cheeky tagline ‘Love boobs? So does cancer’ – to spur conversation around breast cancer and action for early detection. Each t-shirt is priced at RM30 and all proceeds from the sale will be donated to BCWA to support breast cancer awareness.

From 5 to 11 October 2015, customers can purchase #GrabitBeatit t-shirts via the MyTeksi app by selecting the #GrabitBeatit fleet icon. GrabCar will deliver the t-shirts to customers for free. Each t-shirt comes in a special Pink Kit, comprising a #GrabitBeatit instruction card for self-examination and badges.

The t-shirts are also available for purchase on Zalora’s website and in Pestle and Mortar’s stores from 12 to 31 October.

In the breast cancer awareness month of October, other #GrabitBeatit activities include:

    • GrabCar rides to send women to breast cancer screening clinics

    • Selfie contest to spread the word on early detection
From 12 to 31 October, customers can take a photo in their #GrabitBeatit t-shirts to show their support for the cause, and encourage their friends and families to do preventive self-examinations. The six most creative photos will win shopping vouchers.
    • Tips on how to conduct self-examination of breasts
