Our mission

Grab’s mission is to drive Southeast Asia forward by creating economic empowerment for everyone.

How we started

Some years back, our co-founders Anthony and Hooi Ling met in business school, with a dream to build a company that would be a force for good in their home, Southeast Asia.

Grab started as MyTeksi in 2012 to make it safe for everyone to travel in Malaysia. But working with the driver community made them realise that there were millions of similar everyday entrepreneurs that don’t have access to job opportunities or resources to help them progress and support their aspirations.

With more than 70 million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in SEA, employing over 140 million people and accounting for 99% of all businesses in the region, everyday entrepreneurs are the bedrock of our economy.

This inspired our co-founders to build a technology-oriented company in Southeast Asia that could address these issues, creating positive social impact, while delivering profit for sustainability.

Nine years on, Grab has grown into a household name in Southeast Asia. As the region’s leading superapp with hyperlocal services, we strive to live up to our mission every day.

Making a difference The Grab Way

Every Grabber is guided by The Grab Way which explains our mission and lays out our thesis of how we can achieve it together. The Grab Way also includes the 4Hs, a set of principles to help us stay on mission and support each other.

How we will achieve our mission

By building marketplaces that enable everyday entrepreneurs to thrive

We empower everyday entrepreneurs by building and growing markets that they can participate and thrive in. To achieve this, we aim to:

  • Provide delightful experiences that encourage consumers to do business with everyday entrepreneurs
  • Offer unbeatable value

By ensuring the sustainability of our mission

Future-building is a long-term endeavour, and we need to make sure we can sustain our momentum for the long haul. Two things we need to do really well:

  • Learn how to help everyday entrepreneurs continuously reinvent themselves
  • Ensure our longevity

Our 4Hs

To help us stay on mission, these 4Hs serve as our guide on how we should lead, collaborate, solve problems, and support each other.

Heart

We aim to serve our communities by always putting consumers first and breaking silos. We work together as One Grab and always bring our best forward. Within Grab, our leaders are servant-leaders who coach, serve, and inspire everyone they work with.

Hunger

We recognise that achieving our mission will require grit, drive, and a deep understanding of ground truths. We embrace Kaizen, the spirit of adaptability, as we constantly improve both what we do and how we work to advance our mission.

Honour

We always act with integrity and honour our word to build trust with our consumers. We must also use resources entrusted to us responsibly and with careful consideration, making the best possible trade-offs with the goal of offering unbeatable value for all.

Humility

We recognise that we are all a work-in-progress and endeavour to learn from every experience. In making decisions, we seek first to understand others’ perspectives, engaging in healthy debate before seeking alignment and working together to perfectly execute on the agreed decision.

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.

As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.

Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
