Grab’s Statement Regarding Proposed New Regulations

  • Statement to be attributed to: Sean Goh, Country Head, Grab Malaysia

Grab is looking to work closely with the government to improve and elevate the standards of our local land public transportation infrastructure and services. Since our inception we have evolved to be Malaysia’s leading superapp platform with a presence in 27 cities across all states, offering a myriad of transportation options such as cars, taxis and social car-pooling. As such we are proud to have provided a reliable, convenient and safer transportation service to passengers while also boosting the income of hundreds of thousands of hardworking Malaysians.

We have just been alerted of the regulatory suggestions and have yet to receive the formal operational directive. As part of the industry we hoped that we, like other players in the market were consulted earlier on, as it does affect hundreds of thousands of drivers across the country.

We have noted the government’s progressive stance in improving the quality and coverage of public transport industry in Malaysia, as stated in the manifesto and various communications. We look forward to actively engage with the Minister of Transport, Mr. Anthony Loke and his team in open dialogue to clarify and smoothen out the details of the new regulations introduced and to ensure minimal interruptions to our driver-partners, operations and processes. Regardless, we will assist our driver-partners through this transition and keep them updated on any developments, as it does affect their welfare and livelihood.

Given that we are doing everything in our efforts, we urge our driver-partners to bear with us as we engage with our government to better understand the regulations and work out the best solutions that will minimise the impact on them.

Our Grab driver-partners (regardless GrabCar or GrabTaxi) are the backbone of our community providing the critical service of transporting millions of Malaysian residents and visitors to their destinations safely and reliably. We are committed to working with our government to promote and encourage a balanced policy framework that levels out the playing field, and enables us to continue our mission of providing better and safer transport services whilst improving the livelihood of our partners.
