Do groceries cost more online? GrabMart vs in-store prices in Malaysia

In summary: Not necessarily. On GrabMart, merchants set their own item prices, and grocers such as Jaya Grocer and Everrise are promoted as offering the same prices as in-store. Where online shopping does cost more, the difference usually comes from fees: delivery, small order fees and packaging. The good news is that you can reduce or avoid most of them.

Who sets the prices on GrabMart?

Prices on the Grab app are determined by merchant-partners and may include SST upfront. Grab’s merchant terms also ask partners to keep app prices substantially similar to their own store prices.

To make pricing easier to check, Grab runs a Same as in-store tagging programme. Merchants who join it have declared that their Grab prices match their in-store prices. If you spot a price difference, you can report it through the Grab Help Centre with a photo as proof.

Grocers with in-store pricing

  • Jaya Grocer: Selected outlets carry a MEGA tag on GrabMart. They offer over 20,000 items at “same as in-store prices”, with free delivery when you schedule a bulk restock ahead of time.
  • Everrise (Sarawak and Kota Kinabalu): Everrise is promoted on GrabMart as offering the same price and selection as in-store.

Where the extra cost comes from

Some price guides say online grocery platforms can cost more because of delivery fees and markups. Here’s what can add to your GrabMart total, and how to manage each cost:

Cost How it works How to manage it
Delivery fee Based on distance, and may rise at peak hours or in bad weather Choose a nearer store, use Self Pick-Up, or get GrabUnlimited
Small order fee The difference between your order and the store’s minimum. Minimums vary by store, location and time Add items to reach the minimum
Packaging charge Applies at some stores Check the store page before you order
Flexible weights Fresh produce can vary by up to 10% from the listed price, and the adjusted cost is shown before you’re charged Order fresh items by the pack where possible

Out-of-stock items won’t cost you either: the merchant will call to remove or replace them, and you only pay for what you receive.

Remember that shopping in person has costs too: fuel or transport, parking and your time. For a quick top-up, ordering from a nearby store with a low delivery fee, or using Self Pick-Up, can keep the gap small or close it completely.

Five ways to pay close to in-store prices

  1. Shop grocers that match in-store prices, such as Jaya Grocer MEGA outlets or Everrise.
  2. Meet the store minimum to avoid the small order fee.
  3. Get GrabUnlimited for up to RM3 off GrabMart delivery on orders of RM50 or more.
  4. Choose Self Pick-Up to save on delivery fees.
  5. Schedule bulk restocks at stores that offer free scheduled delivery.
