Used my friend’s birthday as an excuse for a splurgy meal and it was worth every penny. Trust me, this platter doesn’t look like a lot for two but it was very filling because all the sashimi slices were so thick and fatty (in the best way possible). It made me question all the times I settled for conveyor belt sushi but also reminded me that I am but a peasant and can’t indulge in this goodness every day. Not pictured: chawanmushi and handroll that really delivered too.

Waaaa! Senryo in ION Orchard offers a refined yet modern take on Japanese cuisine in a sleek, contemporary setting. From the moment you step in, the minimalist décor and ambient lighting create a serene dining atmosphere that perfectly complements the artful dishes on offer. The menu is a delightful blend of tradition and innovation—think impeccably fresh sushi and sashimi alongside inventive small plates that tease the palate with unexpected flavor combinations. It’s quite solid.

Absolutely loved the vibe and food! We had 5 pieces handroll set ($38) and the engawa roll was lit🔥 The tapas we had did not disappoint too! Happy hour cocktails were at 2 for $24 from 530-7pm! 🍸 The only downer was we felt the meal was a little rushed through, we were served the hand rolls while still on the sides, and were told to eat the handroll soon before the nori loses it crisps! Would revisit!

OMG, just had the most amazing temaki experience ever! 😍 The restaurant's vibe is so chill and modern, with a focus on the food. Here's what I devoured: * Foie Gras Temaki: melt-in-your-mouth goodness! * Hotdog Temaki: A fun and unexpected twist! * Salmon Temaki: Fresh and flavorful! * Fried Rice Balls: Crispy on the outside, yummy on the inside! The service was impeccable, and the staff was super friendly. Definitely recommend this place to all temaki lovers! You won't regret it! 😉

Tried this handroll bar for the first time and it’s a pleasant night! Good for: - 👩‍❤️‍👨👩‍❤️‍👩 date night: very cozy and chill for your first few dates, nice drinks to fuel the conversation too - 🗣️👯‍♀️ hangouts with close friends: casual spot for friendly catchup, work complaint and emotional dump 🤣 ——- 🍣 Food: - both me and my friend went for their 5-roll set ($38) and added on $18 for their sake pairing (that is 5 shots! One shot for each roll) - i quite liked their salmon roll and engawa roll, the sake pairing was good too. Rest of the rolls were just normal and standard. - the appetiser we got —- Buta Kakuni Skewers —- was delicious and would recommend - warabi mochi as dessert was good but standard, nothing to call out for ——— 🍶💰Drink price their happy hour (slide 9️⃣) and sake pairing price (slide 6️⃣7️⃣) is quite worth it, would suggest to go with it.

🍣 Anniversary Treat at Toku Nori 🎉💞 Celebrated our special day with their handrolls and honestly, the food was really good — fresh, flavourful and so satisfying in every bite 🤤✨ But the portions are on the smaller side, and it’s definitely pricey for what you get 💸😅 Great as a snack or light bite, but maybe not quite enough for a full meal unless you order a lot 🍣🤏 Still, a lovely little stop for our anniversary — quality was there, just wish the portions matched the price! 💕

Have always been curious about Rappu handroll bar and after finding out 20% total bill discount on grab dine out, decided to give it a try. What we ordered: 🍣 Tengo 6 - a set of 6 traditional style handrolls 🍣 Jigo 6 - a set of 6 open-faced rolls with a lot more aburi / mentaiko / spicy flavour profile (what I tried) 🍺🍶 some basic beers and sake - didn’t go for pairing Verdict: If you just order Jigo for yourself it might get boring after a while due to similar taste profile —— though the starting and ending piece (Hotate & engawa) were 👍👍👍👍👍 If you r going in pair, might wanna try two different sets and alternate / share. 💰Damage: Original price $160+ for two After discount $131 for two ✨Ambience: I was expecting a izakaya or bright restaurant vibe….surprisingly it is more like a bar Mostly counter seats, have good view over bar/kitchen act 😜 💞 Good for dates or casual hangs.

My third time visiting RAPPU Handroll Bar (Duxton Road). Their “RAPPU 6” handroll set (Hotate, Kanpachi, Salmon, Toro, Crab & Engawa) is S$36, so you get a solid variety without breaking the bank. If you’re feeling extra, the High Roller (Uni, F1 Wagyu, Toro etc.) comes in at around S$100+.

Absolutely loved this place. The experience is super fun—they serve one handroll at a time, in a set order, which keeps the pacing spot on and makes each bite feel like its own moment. Not sure if it’s technically omakase, but it definitely has that curated, chef-led vibe. The space is cool and intimate, with moody lighting and a buzz that makes it great for date night or catching up with friends. Bonus points for offering a full veggie menu too—makes it an easy pick for both seafood fans and those skipping it. Will definitely be back.

Pros: • Amazing ambience — super lively, and they even do samba performances around 9 and 10pm, so it gets really engaging. • The sushi is a must-try, and the drinks are honestly so good. • You have to get the pineapple dessert — it’s super fancy and worth the experience. Cons: • Quite pricey. • We actually ate before going, and somehow still left hungry.

The food here was pretty solid and the views took the whole experience up a notch. The hamachi ceviche was bright, fresh, and bursting with flavor. We ordered the seafood cazuela rice which was packed with seafood and full of rich, comforting flavor. The salmon ikura don also impressed us with the salmon slices that are thick, buttery and fresh. Dessert was a bit more ordinary. The crème brûlée and mochi ice cream were fine but didn’t quite match the excitement of the earlier dishes.

Visit on Mondays or Thursdays to enjoy 5 pcs of Salmon Sashimi for $3.90 (unlimited)!!!! They also have $3 Sake and $6 Beer on those two days. The Mentaiko Udon is really good (especially for sharing). I personally like the Gindara (black cod)! The sushi rolls are really popular and my favourite is the Octo-Riffic Roll. Very good for a dinner with friends or even date night with your partner!

Why It Matters

Overview of Sushi Traditions and Design Importance, emphasizing the essence of the dining experience

Understanding sushi is appreciating a culinary practice steeped in respect—for ingredients, for skill, and for guests. Beyond just the menu, the restaurant’s design is central to this tradition, honoring Japanese roots while considering local tastes and global trends. In Singapore, restaurant owners, designers, and chefs consciously build spaces that transport guests to Japan, using natural materials like wood, stone, and paper, often paired with ambient lighting and minimalist layouts. This blend creates a meditative and immersive experience where sushi is the star.

Design elements such as counter seating foster interaction with the chef, open kitchens encourage transparency, while subtle music and nature-inspired décor promote relaxation. The use of technology—tablets for ordering, digital displays for menus, or even interactive chef’s tables—adds a modern edge that appeals to a tech-savvy audience, elevating the sushi outing beyond a meal into a full sensory experience. These Japanese restaurants showcase a blend of Japan's culinary art and modern design, creating unforgettable dining experiences.

Summary of the Essentials in Japanese Restaurant Reviews

  3. Menu Diversity: From traditional Japanese nigiri to creative, fusion-inspired rolls and vegan offerings, breadth in the menu is applauded.

  5. Restaurant Interior Design: Incorporating natural Japanese elements, clever lighting, minimalist layouts, and captivating shoji screens.
