Sinar Mas Land and Grab Announce Strategic Technology Partnership in BSD City, Indonesia’s First Integrated Smart Digital City

As one of the leading property developers in Indonesia with more than 40 years of experience, Sinar Mas Land understands the importance of strengthening BSD City’s position as the first integrated smart digital city in Indonesia. To further this goal, Sinar Mas Land signed a technology development MoU with Grab, the leading everyday super app in Southeast Asia.

BSD City, 4 March 2019 – As one of the leading property developers in Indonesia with more than 40 years of experience, Sinar Mas Land understands the importance of strengthening BSD City’s position as the first integrated smart digital city in Indonesia. To further this goal, Sinar Mas Land signed a technology development MoU with Grab, the leading everyday super app in Southeast Asia. As the key technological partner, Grab will leverage its technology expertise and human capital to develop digital infrastructure that improves the community’s lives in BSD City. Grab will provide smart and clean mobility solutions in the city, support the growth of micro and small businesses, as well as drive technology development to transform various aspects of life in BSD City as an integrated smart digital city.  This MoU signing is expected to be the first of more to come between Grab and the Sinarmas Group.

The MoU signing ceremony was today attended by Michael Widjaja, Group CEO Sinar Mas Land and Anthony Tan, Group CEO and Co-founder Grab at BSD City, Tangerang. In line with both parties’ commitments to continue developing and enriching the Indonesian digital ecosystem, BSD City Digital Hub Area is projected to become the meeting point for Indonesian information and digital technology business players of the future, from schools that can provide much needed talent to support “Industry 4.0” to startups, coworking spaces, technology companies, e-commerce, creative industry, as well as global companies.

Responding to this strategic partnership, Michael Widjaja, Group CEO of Sinar Mas Land explained, “As a developer of cities, BSD City seeks to bring innovation to improve people’s lives in every project that we do. Today, we continue to innovate by establishing an integrated transportation system and developing much needed technology required to complement available public facilities in this city. For Sinar Mas Land, it is important for us to provide healthier lifestyle and better mobility for the community through the development of related public facilities. We have seen Grab as a qualified partner to support us. Grab has the technology we need and we are happy to work with them.”

Smart cities require services that improve the quality of life and convenience of day-to-day living, and the BSD integrated smart digital city is ideal for Grab to pilot and offer new services that meet the high expectations of our customers.”

This partnership is in line with Grab’s remarkable growth in Southeast Asia including in Indonesia as the everyday super app that offers ride-hailing services, food and package delivery, as well as digital payments to millions of Southeast Asian residents. As part of this agreement, Grab will establish a Grab Innovation and Engineering Lab as the research and development center for innovation at GOP 9, BSD City, utilizing artificial intelligence technology to create a smart and clean transportation system through three collaborative project plans. The three planned projects that will be carried out by Grab and Sinar Mas Land include:

  • Conduct mapping of BSD City area to provide more accurate pickup and drop off points for passengers in the area.
  • Offer a trial of Personal Mobility Devices (PMD) to facilitate close-range transportation at affordable prices.
  • Pilot shared mobility solutions for the BSD City area

Grab will also hold a Grab Ventures Velocity program in BSD City. This is an accelerator program where startups will be provided with training and mentoring sessions to further scale their businesses. Selected startups will have the opportunity to be further developed and incorporated into the Grab app. BSD City, as Indonesia’s first integrated smart digital city is a conducive location for this program.

In addition to facilitating solutions for transportation challenges in BSD City, Sinar Mas Land and Grab will also support local small and medium culinary businesses in the area as part of its effort to contribute to the economic growth by establishing a satellite kitchen called Kitchen by GrabFood. The Kitchen by GrabFood will bring closer together culinary products by local merchants and food enthusiasts around BSD City area utilizing Grab’s technology. In Indonesia, GrabFood is available in 178 cities. Furthermore, GrabFood’s number of deliveries and merchants have increased 8x from January 2018 to January 2019.

BSD City as a pioneer of an integrated smart digital city has developed digital infrastructure and facilities to support the lives of its residents. Initial steps have been taken to become the first integrated smart digital city by developing a Digital Hub area as part of the digital ecosystem. This area is expected to become the ‘Silicon Valley” of Indonesia dedicated to support daily operations of technology and digital companies.
