Grab, Southeast Asia’s leading online-to-offline (O2O) mobile platform, and HOOQ, Asia’s first and largest video-on-demand service, today announced a breakthrough partnership under which Grab and HOOQ will collectively join forces to bring premium video entertainment content to millions of users in Southeast Asia, starting with Indonesia before being rolled out to Singapore, Philippines and Thailand.

  • This is the first of its kind integration between a regional digital platform and a leading online video streaming provider that spans across Southeast Asia
  • HOOQ to offer OTT video service through Grab’s mobile app launching first in Indonesia and Singapore
  • This partnership is strengthening Grab’s strategy of becoming the everyday super app in the region, making the platform altogether more engaging

Singapore & Jakarta, 13 February 2019Grab, Southeast Asia’s leading online-to-offline (O2O) mobile platform, and HOOQ, Asia’s first and largest video-on-demand service, today announced a breakthrough partnership under which Grab and HOOQ will collectively join forces to bring premium video entertainment content to millions of users in Southeast Asia, starting with Indonesia before being rolled out to Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. Today, Grab introduces the “Video” tile to its customers in Indonesia, starting with Platinum customers.

The partnership is a significant milestone for both companies as it now expands Grab’s customer offerings to include a video service and increases its stronghold as an everyday app. Users will see HOOQ integrated within Grab’s digital environment offering a seamless video experience as part of their everyday Grab interaction. This partnership includes access to HOOQ’s top catalog of popular Indonesian, Asian and Hollywood titles, new Original series, as well as 19 free-to-view channels. All Grab customers get 3 months access to HOOQ when they complete the registration for the first time.

As online video becomes one of the stickiest media formats in Southeast Asia, where about 80 percent of all Southeast Asians say they watch online video everyday, the partnership will also tap huge online video demand in the region, where subscription revenues are set to grow 6.5 times to USD $390 million in 2022 from USD $60 million in 2017.

Hidayat Liu, Group Head of Strategy and Business Development of Grab, said, “We are very excited about this partnership. This is the first of its kind integration between a regional digital platform and a leading online video streaming provider in Southeast Asia and represents a milestone for both digital services and online video in this region. With this new partnership HOOQ gets to expand their footprint in the Southeast Asia markets by leveraging the Grab network and Grab gets to expand its service offering to millions of our users.”

This unique partnership will greatly expand HOOQ’s customer base as Grab users will be able to browse, pay and play video directly from the Grab app. Peter Bithos, CEO of HOOQ, commented, “2018 has been a great year for us and we are so excited to partner with Grab to bring great content to more Indonesian customers. For the first time in Southeast Asia, two leading companies will join technologies to provide an “always on” free and premium video content from HOOQ within Grab’s everyday super app. Indonesia has the largest digitally engaged user base in Southeast Asia and it is appropriate that Grab and HOOQ have chosen Indonesia to be the very first country to showcase the partnership. We will follow this with service launches in Singapore, Philippines and Thailand.  We are confident that this partnership will provide millions more customers the ability to enjoy HOOQ’s premium and free content every day!”

As a special launch offer, Grab customers will be able to access HOOQ for 3 months with just few clicks and watch over 10,000 hours of local blockbuster Originals such as Ayat Ayat Cinta 2, Dear Nathan Hello Selma and the award winning Marlina The Murder In Four Acts and HOOQ latest production such as Cek Toko Sebelah The Series, Brata and Keluarga Badak.  What’s more, Hollywood fans can catch the latest TV series same day as U.S. telecast including Supergirl, and The Flash, together with hot favourites such as Gotham, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Mentalist and The Vampire Diaries, just to name a few.

“We are excited to be the first market to launch this new service to our loyal users. The new ‘Video’ tile will be the  gateway to a new world of entertainment. By integrating video into the Grab app, it makes it more convenient for our users who want to catch their favorite local series or movie to watch it seamlessly from our app. In the future, we will be able to provide more contextualised video recommendation depending on the location, time of day and user behavior.” said Ridzki Kramadibrata, President of Grab Indonesia.

“Indonesia is a key market for HOOQ and we are delighted to be able to offer this new service to new and existing users within Grab’s platform. We are constantly innovating to provide our users with the very best in content, an easy-to-use service and improved access to our platform across the region, by taking an innovative approach and forming strategic partnerships. 2018 was a great year for us; we have doubled our subscriber base over the last 12 months, leading the way in the OTT segment.” said Guntur Siboro, Country Head HOOQ Indonesia.
