Grab launches in Cambodia with Ministry of Public Works and Transport

  • Southeast Asia’s #1 ride-hailing app launches in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, December 19, 2017 – Grab, Southeast Asia’s leading on-demand transportation platform, has launched in Phnom Penh today and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Cambodia (MPWT) to support the Kingdom’s infrastructure development. Grab provides safe and reliable on-demand transportation, and will use its technology and data to improve road safety and traffic management in Cambodia.

The MOU was signed at Grab’s launch event this morning between H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport and Tan Hooi Ling, Co-founder of Grab, in the presence of Mr. Oliver Ching Ming Han, First Secretary (Political) of the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore in Phnom Penh, and Mr. Nick Beresford, Country Director, United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) Cambodia.

H.E. Sun Chanthol said, “We are appreciative that Grab is a fully compliant company in all the ASEAN markets they operate in, adhering to high ethical standards in making transportation accessible for all and in bringing Southeast Asia into the digital economy.”

We look forward to working closely with MPWT, which has taken big steps to modernising the country’s infrastructure. Together, we will use technology to create safer roads, improve traffic, and provide greater income opportunities for the local community,” said Tan Hooi Ling, co-founder of Grab.

Grab is the first ride-hailing company worldwide to be awarded the ISO 9001:2015 certification. This means it has set best practice standards for its operational processes, and will apply these standards to improving transportation in Cambodia.

Better travel experiences through JustGrab

Grab introduces its popular JustGrab service in Cambodia. When passengers book JustGrab rides, the Grab app displays the exact trip fare. Drivers who accept the ride will honour the trip fare, making Grab bookings an easy and negotiation-free process for both passengers and drivers.

JustGrab also offers passengers shorter waiting times by alerting the nearest available Grab driver on the booking. This also helps to reduce traffic congestion, as drivers do not need to drive around to find passengers. Passengers can also collect GrabRewards loyalty points from Grab rides and use them to receive additional Grab discounts.

Consumers can now download the Grab app from the App Store or Google Play for free. Using Grab, they can book JustGrab rides anywhere and anytime, not only in Cambodia but also in most Southeast Asian markets they travel to.

Better income for drivers

Across the region, Grab drivers earn on average one-third (32%) more on a per hour basis compared to average worker wages. Drivers can get more bookings and earnings with Grab, as Grab uses its travel data to track areas with high customer bookings, and alerts available drivers to head to those locations.

Grab’s platform is open to all interested drivers who can register to drive with Grab by signing up on the app or at https://www.grab.com/kh/driver/ with his full name, driver’s licence and national identification. All documents will then be verified at the Grab office.

Safer journeys

Safety first. Grab selects the best drivers for Grab, and provides training on safe driving to all drivers. Grab checks all drivers to ensure they have proper driving licences and passengers can see their drivers’ name, vehicle number and photo, ID in the Grab app.

All drivers and passengers enjoy a personal accident insurance provided for free by Grab, which they can claim in the unlikely event of an accident. The Grab app also has a ‘Share My Ride’ feature where passengers can share their real-time location using GPS tracking, so that friends and family know where they are during the trip.

Accident rates with Grab are on average 5 times lower than the national traffic accident rates in the countries Grab operates in.

Convenience of cashless transactions to local communities

Grab partners with Wing Money, Cambodia’s leading mobile banking services provider, to provide all drivers in Cambodia with an account for Wing Money’s digital financial services. Grab has introduced almost one million drivers to bank or e-money accounts across Southeast Asia, helping to introduce them to basic financial services.

Grab is committed to work with the government to bring more Cambodians into the cashless economy. Passengers can choose to pay for rides either with cash or GrabPay, an in-app cashless feature linked to credit cards such as VISA and Mastercard.

Grab now operates its ride-hailing services in 156 cities in eight Southeast Asian countries: Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia. It has more than 2.1 million drivers, and more than 72 million downloads of the Grab app.
