Meet the “GrabRangers”: The Volunteer Riders Proving True Heroes Drive on Two Wheels
.
Every minute on the road matters, especially for delivery riders where time often translates into opportunity and income. Yet for a community of riders known as the “GrabRanger,” earnings are not their only motivation. This volunteer rider community willingly dedicates part of their time and income to helping people in need, expecting neither recognition nor reward in return— driven simply by a belief in kindness and the desire to give back to society.
Although they come from different backgrounds, they are united by one common spirit: a willingness to help others. Through their everyday acts of generosity, they create meaningful moments for those around them while spreading positivity across society— proving that true heroes of the road ride on two wheels.
From “No One Helped Me” to “Never Leaving Anyone Behind”
GrabRanger began with the personal experience of Cherdchai Panuwong, known as “Cherd,” a 58-year-old rider and one of the community’s co-founders, who once struggled alone on the road.
“At that time, my motorcycle ran out of fuel in the middle of the road. I had to push it alone for a long distance while hundreds of cars passed by and no one stopped to help.”
“I felt really discouraged until one person finally pulled over and helped me push the bike all the way to a nearby gas station. I was deeply touched, and it completely changed my perspective. I promised myself that I would never let someone go through that alone. Since then, whenever I see someone struggling on the road and I’m able to help, I do it immediately without hesitation.”
Since that day, Cherd has dedicated himself to helping others, volunteering his time outside of work to support people facing difficulties on the road. Along the way, he met many fellow riders who shared the same mindset. What began as small acts of kindness among a handful of riders gradually evolved into a stronger community and officially became GrabRanger in 2025.
Today, GrabRanger has expanded into a growing network across Bangkok and surrounding areas. The group uses social media as the main channel to receive incident reports and coordinate assistance, allowing nearby riders to quickly step in and help those in need. It also serves as a platform for members to share stories and experiences that inspire volunteerism and encourage others to contribute positively to society.
Relief for the Receiver, Fulfillment for the Giver
For GrabRanger members, helping others is not limited to fellow riders, but extends to anyone they encounter on the road who may need assistance, because emergencies can happen to anyone at any time.
Anukun Kotcharit, or “Somdui,” a passionate 30-year-old rider and one of GrabRanger’s key members shared: “I’m part of the admin team that coordinates assistance, from receiving incident reports to notifying riders in nearby areas. Many times, I also head out to the scene myself to help. We assist anyone we encounter, not just riders. The most common situations include running out of fuel, flat or burst tires, battery issues, and road accidents. Whatever the situation may be, we do our best to help.”
“There have been many cases where we stayed with people from beginning to end. For example, one rider was involved in a road accident and had no one around to support him. At first, we only intended to help at the scene, but eventually we accompanied him to the hospital, helped file the police report, and delivered documents on his behalf so he wouldn’t have to manage everything while injured.”
In other situations, we shared fuel with riders who ran out of gas, helped repair vehicles late at night during heavy rain, and assisted families stranded with young children so they could safely return home.”
“These acts may seem small, but they mean a lot to the person going through difficult moments. Many times, I can see how relieved and happy people are when someone steps in to help. But when I return home, I realize I feel even happier myself. It’s a feeling beyond what I ever expected, and whenever I think back on it, it always makes me feel proud and fulfilled,” Somdui shared with a smile.
The Ripple Effects of Volunteer Spirit
For Phongsak Kantachote, better known as “Heart,” a 51-year-old rider, helping others has long been a part of his life.
“I’ve been involved in volunteer work for many years. During major incidents including recent building collapse, I also joined onsite efforts to help those affected people. Even though it sometimes means sacrificing earning opportunities, I still want to help because I want to see our society become a better place, driven by people supporting one another,” he shared.
After joining GrabRanger, Heart saw an opportunity to expand this small force for good even further by creating content to share the group’s stories with a wider audience. Through these efforts, he hopes to encourage more volunteer-minded people to join GrabRanger, while reminding society that there are still people willing to stand by and support others on every journey.
From its humble beginnings, GrabRanger has grown far beyond expectations. “GrabRanger has continued to grow steadily, and today we have more than 1,300 members across over 50 districts in Bangkok and nearby provinces. As for our social media page, we initially thought we might only reach a few thousand followers, but now we have more than 20,000 followers. To us, that represents tremendous support and reflects that people value what we do.”
“Strangely enough, I can never remember exactly who I’ve helped before, but whenever people see me, they remember me so clearly and say, ‘You once helped me,’ with a big smile on their faces. That really warms my heart. Some even end up joining the team themselves. It feels like we’re continuously passing kindness forward, and it never ends,” He added.
Looking ahead, GrabRanger aims to expand its network nationwide so volunteer riders can keep helping people wherever they are and bring greater peace of mind to every journey. True to the community’s slogan, #WeMayNotRideFastButOurKindnessNeverStops and #WeAreAlwaysByYourSideOnEveryRoad.
“As long as we maintain volunteer spirit and are willing to sacrifice a little of our work time to help others without expecting anything in return, society can truly become a better place. At the same time, we also discover genuine happiness,” Heart concluded.
