Updates on the latest Covid-19 measures (2022) & what it means for you as a PHV driver

Singapore has significantly eased most of its Covid-19 restrictions from 29 March 2022, including doubling group sizes to 10 and making mask-wearing optional in outdoor areas.

Read on as we outline the key changes and what it means for you as a Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) Driver!

1. Mask-wearing now optional outdoors

Mask-wearing will now be optional outdoors, but is still encouraged in crowded areas. It is mandatory to wear masks indoors, including in malls, public transport, office buildings, hawker centres and other indoor settings. Places which are sheltered but with open access, such as HDB void decks and bus stops, will be regarded as outdoor areas.

What this means for you:

  • Wear your masks when driving and remind your passengers to do the same: Mask wearing is still required in private hire vehicles. Do ensure that your passengers put on their masks promptly when they are in your car!

2. Cessation of Rostered Routine Testing (RRT) Regime for all sectors

From 29 March 2022, RRT will be stopped for all sectors. Individuals are still encouraged to self-test when they feel unwell or have had recent contact with an infected person, and to follow the necessary health protocols if they test positive.

What this means for you:

  • Grab Drivers will no longer need to declare FET RRT on Sync*: Previously, Driver-/Delivery-Partners had to complete and declare their RRT test results on a weekly basis or face suspension. Moving forward, this requirement will be removed.
  • Self-test if you’re feeling unwell/are a close contact: Your safety is our priority. We strongly urge Grab Drivers to rest and recuperate when feeling unwell**.

*Driver-/Delivery-partners who are unvaccinated/partially vaccinated will not be allowed to drive/deliver on Grab until they are fully vaccinated. Click here for more info.
**GrabRental hirer-partners who have opted-in to GRBeyond, can claim up to 6 days of MC Rental Recovery, subject to the T&Cs here.

3. 10 pax group sizes and lifting of consumption of alcohol after 10:30pm

The permissible group size for social gatherings and dining out will be increased from 5 to 10 pax (for those vaccinated). Furthermore, the ban on alcohol sales in pubs and eateries after 10:30pm will be lifted.

What this means for you:

  • Opt for GrabFamily: Consider using your vehicle for other job types, such as GrabFamily. GrabFamily is a range of transport services for passengers commuting with kids below 1.35m tall for a safer and more convenient experience. Maximise your earnings with GrabFamily, where you will be trained to install child restraints and earn more with every ride! For more information, visit the GrabFamily website.
  • Rent a 6-seater car: Given the potential increase in demand for 6-seater rides to accommodate bigger group sizes, why not rent or switch to a 6-seater car from GrabRentals? Popular models include Toyota Sienta Hybrid, Toyota Prius Plus, Honda Freed and more, from an effective rate of $60/day (excl. GST)! You’ll also get to enjoy increased fares and earnings with GrabCar6 rides.

What happens if I’m Covid positive?

IMPORTANT: If you are diagnosed with Covid-19, you are not allowed to provide services using the Grab app (e.g. driving or deliveries).

GrabRentals hirer-partners*: GrabRentals hirer-partners who are Covid positive may claim rental waivers from GrabRentals, up to a maximum cap of 7 days (for those vaccinated). Reimbursement for rental waiver days will be calculated based on the Covid positive dates reflected in the proof of infection documentation provided.

Komsan Chiyadis

GrabFood delivery-partner, Thailand

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.

As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.

Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
