All GrabHitch rides are insured!

Carpooling with GrabHitch works exactly the same as if you were taking your friend’s or family member’s car.

GrabHitch, like other carpooling services, are classified under Section 142 of the Road Traffic Act. The Act states that you do not need to convert your private motor insurance to a commercial motor insurance policy to drive with GrabHitch.

In the event of an unfortunate accident during a Hitch ride, your personal private motor insurance should usually cover the costs incurred from the accident, under these two standard terms:

  • Coverage against your legal liability arising from any accident for death or bodily injuries to any person and damage to third-party property, and
  • Personal accident benefits and coverage for medical expenses incurred due to a car accident.

Update! FWD, Income, AIG , MSIG, DirectAsia, Aviva, Tokio Marine, Sompo, Etiqa, Liberty and Great American Insurance Company (GAIC) have confirmed that personal motor insurance purchased from them will be able to cover GrabHitch rides*, as we are considered a social carpooling platform, and not for hire or reward. For other insurers, do reach out to them to confirm the coverage of Hitch rides under your motor insurance policy.

Free Personal Accident Insurance coverage for Riders

As of 1st June 2017, Grab’s Group Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) is extended to paying GrabHitch riders in Singapore at no additional cost. The PAI for GrabHitch riders is Singapore’s first insurance that not only covers accidental death but also medical expenses that are incurred in the event of an accident on social carpool rides*.

The PAI for GrabHitch riders complements the personal motor insurance purchased individually by GrabHitch drivers.

^Rider refers to the individual who made the booking, together with his/her companions as indicated on the app (if applicable). No coverage will be provided if the ride is taken by a different rider who made the Hitch booking, or if the total number of riders are indicated inaccurately. 


What is covered by this policy? 

Our personal insurance is designed to compensate the rider(s)^ for bodily injuries arising from an accident during a GrabHitch ride. There will be a reimbursement of the rider(s) for the following types of claims, up to the limits as specified in the Policy:

Accidental Death
In the event of death of rider(s) caused solely by the accident and occurring within 12 months from the date of the accident.

Permanent Disablement
In the event that the rider(s) suffer permanent disability caused solely by the accident and occurring within 12 months from the date of such accident. We will compensate based on the degree of impairment or disability, as set out by the policy regarding the relevant percentage for each part of the body.

We will not be liable if the death or permanent disablement result directly or indirectly from any illness or infectious disease, and not from an injury caused solely by an accident.

Medical Expenses
In the event of rider(s) requiring medically necessary treatment for an injury cased solely by an accident, we will reimburse the insured person for any such medical expenses for treatment within 12 months from the date of the accident, up to the limit specified by the insurance policy.

If the rider(s) become entitled to a reimbursement of all or part of the above claims from any other source, we will only be liable for the excess of the amount recoverable from such other source. 

General exclusions apply, e.g. strike, riot, civil commotion and terrorism, accidental miscarriage, any wilful or unlawful act etc.

The total personal accident benefit for the rider is up to US$10,000 for accidental death and permanent disablement, or up to an aggregate limit of US$50,000 per accident in Singapore.


What should I do if I’m involved in a road accident?

If you and your driver were in an accident, move to a safe area away from traffic.

Should you require emergency assistance, contact the police at 999, or SMS 71999 if it is not safe to call. You may also use the Share my ride function in your Grab app to share details of your ride with the police. If you require medical attention, please call 995.

Please report the accident to the Grab Support Team within the next 48 hours. Also, make sure to file a claim with your personal motor insurance provider, and provide proof of personal insurance to relevant parties at the scene of the accident.


*For any insurance to cover GrabHitch rides, GrabHitch drivers are expected to abide by LTA’s carpooling regulations of not more than 2 carpooling trips a day. Each trip is defined as the location of your first rider’s pick-up point to your own intended destination. Each trip may consist of more than 1 pick-up as long as the pick-ups are along the same way, and the aggregate amount that GrabHitch drivers collect does not exceed the expenses incurred for the carriage of all the riders.

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.

As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.

Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
