Auto Excess Cover

Untitled-8-042

Auto Excess Cover (underwritten by Chubb Insurance Singapore Limited) is designed to reduce the financial burden of the driver in the event where he/she is required to pay excess due to an accident involving his/her rented vehicle.

Under the scheme, you will enjoy Auto Excess Cover of $1,500 per claim at no cost, subject to the following T&Cs:

  • Maximum of 2 claims per policy year (1 Oct 2019 – 30 Sep 2020)
  • Covers the main-hirer only
  • All claims will come with a $500 deductible on the auto excess paid
  • Claims to be submitted to Chubb within 30 days of occurrence
  • Driver has to be renting from GrabRentals or a Fleet Partner
  • Must not be suspended or banned from driving within Grab during the accident
  • Driver must have paid for auto excess to their own motor insurance company and the auto excess paid is non-refundable or recoverable

GrabRentals Hirer-Partners

GrabRentals Hirer-Partners who are covered by Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) can stack the benefits from the CDW program with the RentalShield Auto Excess Cover to further reduce accident excess as necessary.

Example 1 (GrabRentals CDW & RentalShield Auto Excess Cover)

  • Mr Ong has an accident (‘own damage’ case) where total repair cost for his and the third party’s vehicle is $5,000
  • Since he has purchased the GrabRentals CDW, his excess is limited to $963 for Section I & II each, for a total of $1,926
  • A free replacement vehicle will also be provided while Mr Ong’s original rented vehicle is undergoing repairs
  • For his loss of $1,926, Mr Ong may then proceed to claim under RentalShield’s Auto Excess Cover, which contains a $500 deductible
  • Once the claim is approved, Chubb will pay Mr Ong $1,426
  • Therefore, Mr Ong only incurs a loss of $2,426 (calculated by taking $1,926+$500) instead of the full $5,000

Fleet Partner Hirers

Example 1 (Auto Excess Cover)

  • Mr Lim has an accident where he paid an auto excess of $5,000
  • He files a claim under RentalShield’s Auto Excess Cover which contains a $500 deductible
  • Once the claim is approved, Chubb will pay Mr Lim $1,500
  • Therefore, Mr Lim only incurs a loss of $3,500 as auto excess

Example 2 (Auto Excess Cover)

  • Mr Tan has an accident where he pays an auto excess of $1,500
  • He files a claim under RentalShield’s Auto Excess Cover which contains a $500 deductible
  • Once the claim is approved, Chubb will pay Mr Tan $1,000
  • Therefore, Mr Tan only incurs a loss of $500 as Auto Excess

How does the Auto Excess cover work?

The cover is designed to reduce the financial burden of the driver in the event where he/she is required to pay excess due to an accident involving his/her rented vehicle.

How much is the sum insured offered under the cover?

Hirer-partners are covered up to an excess of S$1,500 per claim.

How many claims am I entitled to per year?

Hirer-partners are entitled to a cap of 2 claims per hirer per policy year. The current policy year is from 1 October 2019 to 30 September 2020.

How do I apply for the policy?

No application is required. You are included in the cover as long as you have rented a vehicle from GrabRentals or a Fleet Partner.

Will I be liable for any charges?

Claims under this policy include a $500 deductible amount, which you will be liable for on the first $500 for any excess incurred. The $1,500 coverage applies from the $501 dollar onwards. Please refer to the examples below:

Example 1

  • Mr Lim has an accident where he pays an auto excess of $5,000
  • He files a claim under his Auto Excess policy which contains a $500 deductible
  • Once the claim is approved, Chubb will pay Mr Lim $1,500

  • He files a claim under his Auto Excess policy which contains a $500 deductible
  • Once the claim is approved, Chubb will pay Mr Tan $1,000
  • Therefore, Mr Tan only incurs a loss of $500 as Auto Excess

How does the RentalShield Auto Excess policy affect my voluntary Auto Excess purchased from Chubb previously?

Your voluntary Auto Excess purchased from Chubb still protects you for the purchased sum insured. You can enjoy this cover (Chubb voluntary Auto Excess) on top of RentalShield Auto Excess.

Example:

  • Mr Lim is already insured for $2,000 under the Chubb voluntary Auto Excess
  • He has an accident where he pays auto excess of $5,000
  • He files a claim under the RenalShield Auto Excess policy which contains a $500 deductible AND he also files a separate claim under his voluntary Auto Excess policy which contains a $500 deductible
  • He informs Chubb that he has both policies and wishes to claim under both
  • Chubb now knows not to charge the deductible twice
  • Once the claim is approved, Chubb will pay Mr Lim $1,500 from the RentalShield Auto Excess policy and $2000 from the voluntary product.
  • Therefore, Mr Lim only incurs a loss of $1,500 as auto excess

Does the Auto Excess policy cover accidents overseas?

The policy provides 24/7 coverage for accidents in Singapore and West Malaysia only.

What types of vehicles are covered or not covered by the policy?

There is no restriction on the vehicle type as long as:

  • It is rented either from GrabRentals or Fleet Partners, and
  • The vehicle is registered with Chubb.

Will my coverage still be valid if I am temporarily suspended or permanently banned at the time of the claim?

The coverage is not applicable for Grab Hirer-Partners who are either suspended or banned during the time of accident, even if they had an active contract at that point in time.

Is it possible for me to purchase a separate auto excess policy with higher limits?

Yes, you are allowed to purchase a separate policy with higher limits; however, in the event of a coverage overlap, both policies will share the cost of the claims for the overlapping cover.

What happens if I made a claim under the Auto Excess cover, but subsequently recovered the excess paid from a third party due to “not at fault” nature of the accident?

The policy excludes any form of excess paid by you which are recoverable or refundable. In this regard, Chubb reserves the right to claw back any claims paid if the excess paid by you is recovered or refunded.

Komsan Chiyadis

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.

As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.

Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
