Driving GrabCar Puts A Smile Back On Daniel’s Face Again

Driving a GrabCar helped me smile again

Private investigator Daniel, not only drives a GrabCar to supplement his income, he also derives happiness from meeting people from all walks of life.

“I injured my back in an accident a few years ago. It forced me to stop working for awhile so I was home a lot, which drained my savings. That’s when I decided to drive with Grab. Not only did it provide me with an income, it also allowed me to meet and interact with lots of new people. Passenger stories never fail to put a smile on my face.”

Driving a GrabCar has, partly, saved me from going into depression. I had met with an accident in 2011 and had to stop working as I had injured my back. My savings soon got depleted but most of all, I felt lonely staying at home. Though I’m not 100 percent recovered, I gradually got better and started working again as a private investigator around September last year. It was about that time that I decided to drive a GrabCar too – to supplement my income.

I love meeting people and sharing stories with them, and these interactions almost always put a smile to my face. I remember once I picked up a passenger from Pasir Ris. She was heavily pregnant and headed to Parkway East Hospital in Joo Chiat. She was walking a little slowly and awkwardly. It turned out her water bag had broken and she was going to the hospital to deliver her second child! As a father of three, I knew that I had to remain calm. I drove her to the hospital quickly using the shortest route I knew but at the same time, I drove smoothly, with no jerky movements. I wished her well when she alighted. I’m glad I helped, in a way, to bring a baby into the world.

Besides meeting people, I also love the flexibility of driving a GrabCar. I can rest if I’m feeling tired or drive less on the days I have medical appointments or meetings with friends. I generally drive from 5pm to midnight daily and earn about $175 which is enough to cover rental and petrol costs, plus allow me to have about $50 pocket money.

My rating is now 4.8 and I have no special secret to attaining this. For me, I just want my passengers to leave my car smiling. I would always greet them nicely when they enter my car and try to strike up a conversation. If they would like to rest, I would give them space to do so.

I do have a signature goodbye wish, especially for those whom I drop off at the airport, such as tourists, pilots or flight attendants. I would always wish them, “May the Lord be with you, and you have a safe journey wherever you are going and reach back safely.” I’d like to think this makes their trip away from Singapore a little better.
