Awaken the hero inside you!

Globally, 1.25 million people – including 180,000 children – are killed in road accidents every year (World Health Organisation, Global Status Report on Road Safety 2015). In the six countries where the IFRC-Grab partnership will be rolled out, there are more than 100,000 reported deaths each year as a result of road accidents – this is close to 10% of the total global death-toll.

Grab recognizes that our driver-partners can play a critical role in improving road safety and saving lives¹. That’s why we have launched Grab H.E.R.O. (Heartland Emergency Response Operation), in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross/ Red Crescent (IFRC) and the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP).

Held at the Singapore Red Cross Headquarters, Grab is running a series of one-day First Aid / CPR and Road Safety 101 training customised for Grab drivers. Check out the photos of our first Grab H.E.R.O session held this week!

Figure 3 : Citizen First Responders are trained to apply first-aid and carry out initial actions on-site when dealing with eight common time-critical medical emergencies.
¹Of all persons who suffer Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) – due to accident trauma, heart attack, stroke etc – the survival rates can be drastically improved from 2.5% to 11%,  if victims received prompt help from someone trained in CPR.

The grand vision is to have one emergency first responder in every Grab vehicle by end of 2017. To turn this aspiration into reality, Grab and IFRC will continue to play an active role in training drivers in all Grab countries across Southeast Asia in life-saving skills, which is critical in a region prone to natural disasters.

COVID-19 has dealt an unprecedented blow to the tourism industry, affecting the livelihoods of millions of workers. One of them was Komsan, an assistant chef in a luxury hotel based in the Srinakarin area.

As the number of tourists at the hotel plunged, he decided to sign up as a GrabFood delivery-partner to earn an alternative income. Soon after, the hotel ceased operations.

Komsan has viewed this change through an optimistic lens, calling it the perfect opportunity for him to embark on a fresh journey after his previous job. Aside from GrabFood deliveries, he now also picks up GrabExpress jobs. It can get tiring, having to shuttle between different locations, but Komsan finds it exciting. And mostly, he’s glad to get his income back on track.
