GRAB INTRODUCES GRABHITCH OFFERING AFFORDABLE DOOR-TO-DOOR RIDES

GrabHitch enables anyone to offset the cost of their journey and meet like-minded people.

Grab app now offers more complementary transport services that cater to different customer segments.

GrabHitch enables anyone to offset the cost of their journey and meet like-minded people.

Grab (formerly known as MyTeksi), Southeast Asia’s largest land transport brand, today introduced GrabHitch, a beta version of an affordable door to door service catering to a different segment – with different travelling preferences and cost considerations.

“This latest service caters to both drivers and passengers who are cost-conscious. Drivers with extra space in their vehicles have the option of picking up passengers who are going the same way to offset the cost of his/her journey, whilst passengers only need to pay for a fraction of the cost compared to other option of transportation,” said Ngiam Xin Wei, Regional Head of GrabHitch.

In essence, GrabHitch addresses a gap in the current market and provides a transport option at a price point between taxis and public transit options, such as trains and buses.

According a study conducted by Nielsen, Malaysia has the 3rd highest car ownership globally whereby 93% of Malaysian households own at least a car whilst 54% have more than one car.

“Therefore, there is a significant pool of vehicles with extra seats for more passengers. Every car has the potential to play a part in improving Malaysia’s public transport network and meet the growing demand of rides each day to reduce traffic congestion and pollution,” said Jaygan Fu, Country Manager of Grab Malaysia.

With the introduction of GrabHitch, the Grab app now offers the most number of complementary transport choices for Malaysians using the app – providing transportation options at all price points, at all times and for all needs.

Benefits of GrabHitch

In addition to the convenience and affordability, GrabHitch, though a beta version, is a welcomed alternative for various other reasons.

  • Environment: As GrabHitch is a social car-pooling service, this potentially reduces the number of cars on the road and carbon emission, and on the long term, plays a part to minimise air pollution.
  • Safety: To help create a connected ridesharing community in Malaysia, GrabHitch drivers and passengers are required to log in to Facebook to use the service. This enables both parties to preview their driver / passenger and if they share mutual friends. Both parties can also indicate that they only want to travel with someone of the same gender.
  • Mutual network: Suitable for journeys of all kinds, GrabHitch makes it easier to enlarge your network to meet people with mutual interests. For example, two employees of the same organisation may be travelling to work together from Subang to KL City Centre, or perhaps, two fitness fans from Damansara Perdana could be going to the same gym together.

Be a Driver / Passenger

Potential GrabHitch drivers must be above 18 years old, have at least 1 year of driving experience, provide a valid driver’s license and vehicle registration number. There will also be further verification and background checks on all drivers, in order to ensure the safety of passengers. All drivers and passengers will be continually verified by our feedback system.

GrabHitch users will also have access to the robust safety measures available on the Grab app, including a record of your booking history and our 24-hour customer service hotline.

How GrabHitch works

Passengers can pre-book a ride as early as seven days in advance up to two hours before pickup, by simply by entering their pickup location and destination.

Drivers, on the other hand, can key in their typical driving routes. Following that, they will be able to view and accept passenger’s requests for a ride. Drivers and passengers will be notified when a successful match of the route is made.

GrabHitch ride fares are designed to cover the driver’s variable costs, such as petrol, tolls and car depreciation. The fares for GrabHitch rides are calculated based on the distance of the ride and are shown upfront, allowing passengers to decide whether they are comfortable with the price before confirming the booking.

Passengers may choose to pay via cash or GrabPay, the cashless debit/ credit card option available on the Grab app.

“We welcome feedback from both our drivers and passengers so we can improve the user’s experience. Our partners are a valued asset and partner to help us continuously step-up on our product offerings and safety measures,” added Fu.
