Leo Books, Penang (Part 1 of 2): “As a child, I loved the feeling of just being in a bookstore. I would’ve bought everything off the shelf, but I could not afford it. But I held the dream of owning a bookstore one day close to my heart. I began my 19-year career as a bookseller when I chanced upon an opportunity to work in a big bookstore. That experience primed me for the opportunity to run my own book store, which came from my uncle and cousin. I remember it taking only three months of planning and setting up, before we opened our doors in 2009. With a vision to bring in a mixture of new and used books that were affordable for Malaysians, Leo’s Books thrived in its early days. In the second year of operations, we decided to bring the business online, but the sales was not enough to sustain the site and it finally came to an end in the 5th year."
Leo Books, Penang (Part 2 of 2): "Some of our best years were from 2014 until 2017. We had secured a large space at Island Plaza that was affordable to rent. That is where we organised and held used book sales which were a hit with many book lovers in Penang, and the response really fuelled us to keep on going. But the rise in competition and decline in reading culture almost forced us to close. That’s when I knew I had to find a new niche for Leo Books. I decided to explore another hobby of mine which was crystals and minerals. This began drawing in customers who were interested in the holistic category. From then, it became the niche of Leo Books. However, the MCO threw a major curveball and keeping the business afloat became even more challenging. It was one of our lowest points, just as we explored a new successful niche. When we didn’t know how to pay rent, we had customers and friends making purchases that were just enough for us to make rent. And that is one of the most important lessons I’ve learnt – to support local shops. Don’t haggle. Your small and simple purchase will go a long way and make a big difference.”
Sookies, Kuantan (Part 1 of 2): "“I used to work in admin at an audit firm. After I got married, I had to leave my job and move back to Kuantan. That’s when I started Sookies – named after my first cat (and also a present from my husband). I used to shop for Sookie and I really enjoyed it. I would usually look for unique accessories and quality kibble, and my pastime turned into my passion. This gave me the idea to source and sell the unique things that I would buy for Sookie to other cat owners. But, I did not have enough capital to start. Then by a stroke of luck, two of my other cats were cast in a popular cat food ad campaign. With their talent fees, I opened up a small ‘gerai tepi jalan’ selling accessories and cat food. As the business grew, my vision for Sookies also grew. I wanted to become a specialty pet store household name for cat owners in Kuantan who want to pamper their pets with the best. So, I put in the work and went from a gerai to a shop."
Sookies, Kuantan (Part 2 of 2): "Throughout the years, Sookies has grown to be more than a pet shop to me. We have rescues in our shop and one of my biggest hopes is to help people see that stray or rescue cats are just as equally deserving of love as their other feline friends. I think we are slowly but surely achieving this because we often get people coming to us for advice of how to nurture a stray cat back to good health. We once had a customer who did not have any experience in keeping cats as pets but had found a small kitten whose eyes had not even opened yet. They came to us for advice and I told them that I did not have a mother cat at that time that could feed the kitten. I also explained that nursing a kitten without a mother cat is a little bit tedious because the kitten had to be fed every two hours but the customer said that she would try to do it on her own anyway. So she could feed the kitten frequently and on time, she brought the kitten with her everywhere -- even to work! Now the kitten is a strong, healthy and beautiful adult cat. I will always remember that story because it reminds me of my bigger purpose with Sookies."
Kedai Serbaneka Mercury, Shah Alam (Part 1 of 2): “After my wife was retrenched from her accounting job at an oil and gas company, we saw an opportunity to open our own business. We decided to sell authentic food and prayer items from Northern and Southern India, because as customers who shop for these products ourselves, we wanted to help other people find these items more easily. That was the beginning of our shop Kedai Serbaneka Mercury, which is named after my wife’s astrology sign. It has been three years since we opened our shop. I’m actually from the IT field, but after seeing how much this meant to my wife and experiencing the joy of serving customers, I left my job to help run the business."
Kedai Serbaneka Mercury (Part 2 of 2): "Of course, it has not always been easy. We have faced many challenges along the way especially when dealing with customers and their expectations. But for us, the most important thing is to always keep them happy. That’s why we help them in any way we can, like sourcing for specific items they may want from India, and recommending what we think they may like or need. This business has taught us to be patient and what it truly means to be of service to others. There one particular incident where my wife and I personally contacted and drove to a customer’s house so we could return their IC which we found in the car park outside our shop. It’s things like that that we hope to be remembered for because it’s the reason why we still get the opportunity to meet new people and do what we love everyday.”

Nyonya Heritage, Brickfields: It’s not every day an IT professional trades computers for kuih - just to keep a 50-year old family business alive. But that’s what John at Nyonya Heritage did. Today, they’re still making over 30 types of Nyonya kuih since the 1960s. Click here to watch their story!
1 Chopati, Keramat Mall (Part 1 of 2): "When I was in primary school, I would help my mother sell nasi lemak and kuih. Our days would begin as early as 4am to prepare for the day. I only learnt how to really cook meals when I was in secondary school and would give my mother a hand at the small stall she and my father had in Keramat. Not long after my father passed away in 2001, my mother became ill. We had no choice but to put the stall business on hold. But we had many loyal customers and they kept asking when we would resume. So I discussed it with my mother and my fiancé. We decided to reopen the restaurant, but we closed it again in 2005 after I got married and began working."
1 Chopati, Keramat Mall (Part 2 of 2): "Then in 2012, my mother’s illness worsened and just before she passed, she had asked me to fulfill one last wish for her: reopen the business she and my late father had worked hard to build. Her request came with one condition: teach people how to eat poori. I remember asking her why this was so important to her. Her reply was simple: “Sebab sedap sangat!”. And that’s what inspired me to offer our signature T Poo set that has both a chapati and poori served with our special chicken keema! Reopening in 2012 did not come without its challenges, but to fulfill my mother’s wish, I had to keep going no matter what. The response we have been receiving since then has made all the hard work worth it and now I do what I can to help others whether it’s through an opportunity to work at my restaurant or by serving them the best chapati and poori. Just like my mother used to do.”
Bess Kopitiam, Melaka (Part 1 of 2): “I met my wife when I worked in a Chinese restaurant in New Jersey. I was working in one of her sister’s restaurants as a waiter. After we got married, her passion for food was really what inspired us to come back to Malaysia and open our first joint with some of our family members. This was a cafe at Melaka Raya. We worked there for about five years before moving on to open our own kopitiam which everyone knows as BESS Kopitiam. My wife and I are always trying to recreate or experiment with recipes that we personally love ourselves. On our menu, there are about five items that people come to us regularly for, but our Nyonya Laksa is the star. It’s actually made with my mother’s recipe that my wife learnt to make from scratch. The laksa paste alone takes about 6 hours to do because our recipe makes sure that every spoonful of our gravy is balanced."
Bess Kopitiam, Melaka (Part 2 of 2): The response to our laksa motivated us to enter it into a competition by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia in 2010. There were about 200 entries in total in the Best Laksa category, and we honestly didn’t know what to expect. We just submitted our entry and hoped for the best. So imagine our surprise when we received a call from the organisers a month later saying we were shortlisted as one of Malaysia’s Top 10 picks. That was already a wonderful win for us, and when we were invited for the award ceremony and given the title of Best Laksa as chosen by the public, we just could not believe it! I still remember feeling so surprised and happy when they announced our name to come up on stage and receive the award. It has been an amazing journey so far with my wife and our kopitiam. I sometimes get asked what the secret ingredient is in our laksa. My reply is always the same: it’s the same ingredient to living a happy life -- balance.”
Santan Nasi Lemak Saiko, Bangi (Part 1 of 2): “I was about 19 when I decided to start my first business selling cendol. At the time we were just a ‘tepi jalan’ stall outside a university in Cyberjaya. I remember some of my family telling me that working an 8-to-5 job would be a lot easier than running my own business. But I was determined to earn my own money and be independent. At that age, you want to have nice things like your friends have. To me, knowing that I was able to own nice things, and pamper loved ones with my hard-earned money was important. So, I kept going, even when times got tough. And believe me there were a few moments where I thought my family was right about working in an office. But when you start a business and give it your everything, it’s hard to quit."
Santan Nasi Lemak Saiko, Bangi (Part 2 of 2): "After opening Santan Nasi Lemak Saiko, one of the toughest times for me was during the MCO. We were seeing drops in revenue as high as 80% but as a business owner, you still have to be responsible for salaries and bills. It was a tough time, but what that period did was transform me from being ‘just a business owner’ to a better negotiator and part time social media expert. People ask me all the time if the word ‘saiko’ refers to what my nasi lemak makes people feel after they eat it. But ‘saiko’ is actually a Japanese word which translates to ‘finest’ -- and that’s what I intend to always give -- the finest nasi lemak, the finest service, and the finest life has to offer to my family and loved ones.”

Lizar Chilli, TTDI: Rosaline Ong has been selling ready-to-cook pastes and marinades from the same market stall in Pasar Besar TTDI for the last three decades, and believes that as long as our taste buds are Malaysian, we’ll always love our chilli. Click here to hear her story!
The Fish Club, Johor (Part 1 of 2): “The idea of being an engineer first planted itself in my mind because of the Ironman movie, believe it or not. But after dabbling with it, I realised the fantasy of being an engineer was far different from the reality. I wanted to try something else out, but I didn't know what or how. It was Ang, my ex-classmate and then co-founder, and his father who was a fisherman that sparked the Fish Club idea and I made the leap of faith. My transition from engineer to entrepreneur was tough, especially in the early days. I was a bit skeptical about selling fish on the internet. I struggled with validating the idea to myself, and the doubt of whether it would work grew stronger because of all the negativity around me. I didn’t know if it would work, but after many rigorous rounds of trial and error, and lots of perseverance and patience, I finally "knew" seafood would be a winner."
The Fish Club, Johor (Part 2 of 2): "We had to learn so much about the traditional fishing trade and how to innovate it to make it more accessible to more and more people. In the early days, there were a lot of operational issues we needed to address because the freshness of the catch is our top priority. As a food producer and retailer, we always want to offer only the kind of food we are willing to feed our children with. So our ‘sea to table’ philosophy really sets the bar for everything that we offer our customers. Now, we are swimming beyond this philosophy of ‘sea to table’ by slowly evolving into a platform for local produce suppliers around Pontian. And would you believe it? This all started when we decided to sell chicken on the Fish Club too! It turned out to be a hit, and sparked the idea to help more local produce suppliers in Pontian. We have recently partnered with vegetable farmers and hopefully, we’re on the right track to building an ecosystem where our local produce suppliers can all benefit and thrive in.”
Utama Florist, Bandar Utama (Part 1 of 2): “The first time I walked into a florist when I was 18 years old, it was the most beautiful place I’d ever seen. I knew then I wanted to own my own florist one day. I found a mentor who I had asked to teach me floral design and arrangement. She said she would on the condition that I would not open a florist in Kuching. So, I put that dream on hold and moved to KL to work. I became a stewardess and saved up all the money I earned to learn floral design and arrangements. It began as just a hobby but my father always said “whatever you decide to do, see it through to the very end”. That’s why I kept going until I became qualified to teach professionally. Then on one of my flights, I met a passenger who knew of someone who owned a florist and was looking to sell the business. It must’ve been fate because at the time, I was shopping around for one I could buy over and run as my own."
Utama Florist, Bandar Utama (Part 2 of 2): "It was love at first the moment I walked through the doors of Utama Florist 24 years ago. My first official day of business was on Mother’s Day in 1997, and honestly, even though it was busy and hectic, it was one of the best days of my life. But being in the flower business isn’t always a bed of roses. One of the challenging periods for me was last year. Sales were not as great and our shop’s rent was overdue for a few months. It was a tough time for me.. When I became the first florist on GrabMart, business was not so encouraging in the beginning. But I kept going and within three months, I was able to settle all of my outstanding rental. My two favourite things about being in this business is being able to express myself through my floral arrangements, but more importantly, being part of people’s most memorable moments in life from celebrating new births, to weddings to mourning the loss of loved ones. That is really a privilege and an honour.”
Soo Cheong Heng, Ipoh (Part 1 of 2): "If you know our father, you will know that he is an extremely hardworking man, with very high standards for the types of things he sells and the kind of service he provides. This is why he switched from selling fruit to dry seafood and ready-to-cook soup packs -- because fruit rots easily and our father would never compromise quality for a quick buck. We were really young when he started this business over 40 years ago. All he wanted to do was to give us the brightest future he could. He started off selling in the local market, and we would help him and my mother on weekends for some extra pocket money. They would give us sales targets to meet on the condition that if we managed to sell RM10 worth of onions and garlic, we’d be able to buy stickers."
Soo Cheong Heng, Ipoh (Part 2 of 2): "Then when the time came for us to manage the business, he moved to a shop lot. In the beginning, there was some difference in opinions with how my sisters and I wanted to run the business. But that’s mostly because our father did not really understand why we wanted to go on social media. He was still supportive and let us explore. So with our background in Marketing, we brought his legacy online. It would be a shame to see everything my father has built for the business and our family disappear. We know that as long as we work hard and keep to our vision, we will succeed. Plus, we’re really proud of being able to carry on our father’s business. It’s the least we can do to repay him for everything he has done for us.”

  1. The “A Local Heroes Story by Malaysians” contest (“the Contest”) is organised by Grabcar Sdn Bhd (“the Organiser”) and is open to all Malaysian citizens, and permanent residents residing in Malaysia.
  2. The Contest will run from 22 August to 4 September (“the Contest Period”).
  3. The Organiser reserves the sole and absolute right to alter or end the Contest at any time prior to the expiry of the Contest Period without giving any prior notice, and no compensation in cash or in kind shall be given. In case of any disputes directly or indirectly arising from the Contest, the decision of the Organiser shall be final and binding.
How To Enter:
  1. An individual (“Participant”) can enter the Contest by posting a social media (Facebook, Instagram or TikTok) video/photo featuring the products (creative food shots) or people behind local Malaysian brands, franchises or “Mom and Pop” stores (i.e. eateries, sundry shops, etc.).
  2. The local Malaysian brands, franchises or “Mom and Pop” stores featured must be available with GrabFood or GrabMart, or accept GrabPay. The duration of the videos submitted must be under 15 seconds. Photos are welcomed too.
  3. Participants’ posts must be PUBLIC.
  4. The Organiser reserves its sole right and discretion to delete, remove, not consider or reject content that is deemed by it to be improper or offensive in whatever nature.
  5. Entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted.
  6. One Participant is only eligible for one (1) prize regardless of the number of entries.
  7. Twenty (20) winners will be selected amongst the eligible submissions via an internal panel from the Organiser. The winners will be determined after the Organisers have conducted the relevant examination, which includes fraudulent checks on the Participants.
  8. The winners will be announced and contacted via direct message (DM) for further instructions to collect their prizes. By participating in this Contest, you provide consent to the Organiser to announce your name and/or release a photograph of you as the prize-winner in our winners announcement. Your prize may be forfeited to the next winner if you are unable to comply with this condition.
  9. Winners who fail to respond to their DM within 7 days of contact will be disqualified and the Organiser reserves the right to award the prize to another winner.
  10. The Organiser expects, however, that Participants will not post any materials that fall into any of the following categories, and may remove any materials that include or involve the following:
    1. Defamation, abuse, harassment, stalking, threatening actions or otherwise which may violate the legal rights (such as rights of privacy and publicity) of others.
    2. Publish, post, distribute or disseminate any defamatory, infringing, obscene, indecent, misleading, insensitive or unlawful material or information.
    3. Upload or attach files that contain software or other material protected by intellectual property laws (or which may infringe a privacy right of another) unless you own or control the rights thereto or have received all necessary consents.
    4. Upload or attach files that contain viruses, corrupted files, or any other similar software or programs that may damage the operation of another’s computer.
    5. Delete any author attributions, legal notices or proprietary designations or labels in any file that is uploaded.
    6. Falsify the origin or source of software or other material contained in a file that is uploaded.
  11. The Organiser reserves its rights to publish or display materials or information, including but not limited to, the names of all Participants for marketing, advertising and publicity purposes in any manner it deems appropriate.
  12. All employees (both permanent and fixed term contract) or agencies of the Organiser and their immediate family members shall not be eligible to participate in the Contest.
The Prize(s):
  1. Each winner will receive GrabFood and GrabMart vouchers worth RM120 in total (RM20 x 3 for GrabFood, and RM20 x 3 for GrabMart), effective from 16 September 2020.
  2. It is mandatory for each winner to have an activated Grab account to receive the prize. The prizes will be credited directly to the winners’ Grab accounts.
  3. The prizes are non-exchangeable and non-transferable, and are not redeemable for cash or other prizes.
  4. The Organiser retains the right to substitute the prize with another prize of similar value.
  5. No compensation will be payable if the winner is unable to use the prize as stated.
  6. The Organiser reserves the sole and absolute right to disqualify any Participant or reject qualifying Participants deemed ineligible (be it under these Terms & Conditions, or because the Participant has engaged in a conduct that the Organiser considers inappropriate or unacceptable).
General Terms and Conditions
  1. The Organiser reserves the sole and absolute right to withdraw, amend and/or alter any part of the whole terms and conditions in relation to this Contest at any time without giving any prior notice to the Participants, and the Participant agrees to be bound by those changes.
  2. By participating in the Contest, Participants are deemed to agree and shall be bound by the terms and conditions herein, as set out upon submission of entry. The terms and conditions herein shall prevail over any inconsistent terms, conditions, provisions or representations contained in any other promotional or advertising materials for the Contest. In the event of any inconsistency, conflict, ambiguity or discrepancy between the English version and any other languages’ version of these terms and conditions, the English version shall prevail at all times.
  3.  The Organiser’s decisions in any matter in relation to the Contest shall be final and conclusive.
  4. The Organiser shall not be liable for any claims by the Participant or third-party claims or losses of any nature, including but not limited to, loss of profits, punitive, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential damages or for other damages and any related claims of any nature, including direct, indirect, third-party, or other damages resulting from or in connection with this Contest.
  5. These terms and conditions shall be governed by the laws of Malaysia and any dispute arising out of or in connection with promotion shall be referred to the exclusive jurisdiction of Asian International Arbitration Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
  6. By taking part in this Contest, you have acknowledged that you have read, understood and agreed to be bound by these terms and conditions. You further agree you shall not question the decisions of the Organiser without limitations or qualification. You agree that all decisions of the Organiser shall be final and conclusive.
