A couple of tips here, hope they help some 
1. try to arrange the balls in a kind of pattern, as shown below, obviously, the more you can arrange, the higher the points when they all clash together, once you have them arranged, grab the appropriate colour ball to shoot in the middle of your pattern, and if you have set them right as shown, a multiple explosion should happen to remaining balls as they meet eachother....
and in doing so, give you more points, but always remember to catch the falling jewels,,
2. If you can form enough patterns as above, you will notice falling objects of value, as in bonus items,.."stop" "slow snail" "bomb" "laser gun"...do not use the bomb or laser if you can help it, your points are in the balls, so dont destroy them...
3. However, you also have another falling object, "Cannon" this I have noticed plays a major part in scoring more points, aim the cannon at a run of balls moving vertically down, keeping an eye on how much track you have left, and just shoot like crazy! ...more balls, more points!
but dont get greedy, when you think you have enough to play with, use remaining balls in cannon to eliminate rows of 3 or more,
