When you want to discard a piece, don't waste time by carrying it over to the dump. Instead, just tap your space bar with your other hand. Keep that other hand on the space bar at all  times to be ready. Those extra seconds really add up.
If using your other hand is not comfortable for you, then just tap the curser on the dump area. You do not need to actually carry a piece to dump it.
By doing this, when nearing the end of a level you can dump pieces quickly to find the one you need.

Thanks for that - I will start using it right away.
Another tip that amyk said is to play from the top down. On the first level it makes a difference of about 25 to 30 thousand points.
